Economic sustainability:
A holistic approach
In Zell am See-Kaprun, economic sustainability is based on three main pillars: environmentally friendly energy generation by Verbund, the sustainable operation of the mountain railways and the commitment to the Austrian Ecolabel in the hotel and catering industry.

The high mountain reservoirs are the heart of the sustainable and year-round energy generation. Thanks to modern pumped-storage and storage power plants, over half a million tonnes of CO2 can be saved every year. This makes Verbund one of the most environmentally friendly electricity producers in Europe. The two mountain railway companies in the region, Schmittenhöhebahn AG and Gletscherbahnen Kaprun AG, are committed to environmentally friendly and sustainable operations. They operate their cable cars and lifts exclusively with electricity from 100% renewable energy sources, making them pioneers in the industry. Schmittenhöhebahn AG is even subject to the strict EMAS guidelines of the EU in order to continuously improve its environmental policy. Gletscherbahnen Kaprun AG follows an integrated quality, environmental and energy management system that ensures sustainable action in all areas of the company. In addition, numerous tourism businesses have already committed themselves to environmentally conscious and socially responsible action and have been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel. This seal of quality is only awarded to businesses that meet strict criteria, such as the use of organic food from the region. Certification by independent experts ensures that these businesses not only protect the environment, but also support the local economy by consciously focussing on regional products.
Social sustainability:
A key to sustainable development
For us, social sustainability is more than just a concept - it is the foundation of our actions and an integral part of our philosophy. We see the workplace as a living environment that goes far beyond professional requirements. Through initiatives such as "Von Alpen das Beste Team" and the "Academy for Entrepreneurs", we are committed to both strengthening the local economy and promoting the personal and professional development of people in our region.

The "Academy for Entrepreneurs" in Zell am See-Kaprun brings a breath of fresh air to the training of managers in the tourism sector by providing an educational programme that is specially tailored to the needs of hoteliers and their successors. At the same time, "Von Alpen das Beste Team" creates a working environment that promotes creativity and collaboration and enables employees to play an active part in shaping their workplace. With regular networking events and a dedicated app for networking and training, we aim to strengthen team spirit and promote a culture of mutual respect and support. Together, we strive to achieve more and ensure the long-term vibrance of our community.
Green future:
Our commitment to the protection of the environment
Nestling between glacier, mountains and lake, Zell am See-Kaprun is a natural paradise. To ensure that this remains the case in the future and that generations to come can enjoy the region’s nature and landscape in both summer and winter, numerous measures have been taken in the area of sustainability. One of the cornerstones of this is the Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria's largest and oldest national park.

Covering an area of 1,856 square kilometres, it offers protection for an impressive variety of flora and fauna, including around 15,000 to 20,000 animal species and over 300 mountain peaks of over 3,000 metres in height. As the home of the Grossglockner and the Pasterze, the park makes a significant contribution to preserving Austria's natural beauty and biodiversity. At the same time, Zell am See-Kaprun, as a Climate & Energy Model Region (KEM), is implementing targeted measures to promote sustainable development. The KEM programme, supported by the Climate and Energy Fund, aims to transform the region into a model tourist region in terms of climate and energy. Specific and innovative projects are being implemented with eleven focal points, ranging from mobility and regionality to the promotion of e-bike use and organising climate and energy congresses. By combining strict nature conservation with pioneering energy and climate initiatives, Zell am See-Kaprun demonstrates that ecological sustainability and economic development can go hand in hand, for the benefit of nature and people.
