NEW: The electric ship "Maria Franziska von Trapp" has been welcoming guests on board since June 2026. Apart from the spacious main deck with panoramic windows, the upper deck also offers impressive views of the mountain scenery. The boat operates silently and emission-free, and is powered exclusively by electricity from renewable energy sources.
A journey with a view
Taking your time and enjoying the moment is particularly easy on board the excursion boats in Zell am See: here you glide leisurely across the water while enjoying the warmth of the sun. From the sun decks of the Maria Franziska von Trapp or the MS Schmittenhöhe, you have a particularly good view of the Steinernes Meer to the north, the Hohe Tauern to the south, as well as Zell's local mountain Schmittenhöhe and the town of Zell am See to the west. A trip back in time is on the agenda on board the nostalgia boat Libelle: this historic boat was built in 1947 and is still in operation on Lake Zell.
New electric boat "Maria Franziska von Trapp"
Christened in June 2026, the electric boat "Maria Franziska von Trapp" combines the future of sustainable shipping services with a special chapter in the history of the Zell am See-Kaprun region – namely, the von Trapp family, who is closely linked to Lake Zell. Maria Franziska von Trapp was born in 1914 in Thumersbach, a district of Zell am See, and was a member of the world-famous von Trapp family. The family lived at the Erlhof in Thumersbach for several years, and became internationally famous through "The Sound of Music".
Four boats for your excursion
Four boats are available if you want to enjoy a boat trip on Lake Zell: The new electric ship "Maria Franziska von Trapp", the "MS Schmittenhöhe", the "MS Großglockner" as well as the nostalgia boat Libelle. The largest one, which also offers the most comfort, is the MS Schmittenhöhe. This excursion boat offers room for 255 passengers. The boats are in operation on Lake Zell on scheduled and panoramic tour services: thus, you can comfortably cross the lake from one side of the shore to the other and get on and off at one of the piers around the lake. Chartering boats
The excursion boats can also be booked for special trips, to organise company events on deck, to show important presentations in a special setting or to celebrate extraordinary occasions such as weddings: sailing into the harbour of matrimony on Lake Zell - that surely brings good luck! On-board catering includes cool drinks, fresh snacks and cakes in all variations: so, you can focus completely on celebrating and enjoying the panorama.
